FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE & PUBLICATION

Garnet Valley High School Student Council Earns National Recognition

[Glen Mills, PA] (April 10, 2021) — For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community, the Garnet Valley High School Student Council has been recognized as a 2021 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National of Student Council (NatStuCo).

“Receiving a National Gold Council of Excellence Award reflects the highest dedication on the part of the school to providing a strong, well-rounded student council program,” said Ann Postlewaite,
National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) student programs director. “NatStuCo applauds the work of the National Gold Councils of Excellence and challenges them to continue their leadership and service to their schools and communities.”

Student Council officers Sydney Pyon, Jada Dye, Stephanie Roberts, Alan Lehrfield, Samantha Loan, Magdalena Waters, and Gregory Lederdor are absolutely thrilled that all of Garnet Valley’s endeavors have been recognized at the national level. Pyon, President of the Council, expresses:

“I am so incredibly proud of everything that our Council has achieved in this past year. Given the circumstances, we have had to come together more than ever and been creative with finding new ways to serve our community and people in need. I honestly think this is one of the most successful years yet for our Council, which is ironic, and it is so rewarding to see our accomplishments being recognized.”

The members of the Student Council are so grateful for this amazing acknowledgement and could not have done it without the encouraging support of Garnet Valley’s teachers and community, especially advisors Ms. Kimberly Griego-Boruch and Señor Glenn Abrams. Their flexibility and willingness to help mold the Council in a safe and positive environment is undeniable. Especially in a pandemic, our students were grateful to have the opportunity to participate in traditional Council events despite the challenging yet rewarding efforts made. Dye, vice president of the council acknowledges:

“It is so exciting to have received this award for the third consecutive year! I am so proud of what our Council has been able to accomplish even while being in a pandemic. While gathering and having all of our normal events wasn’t as easy this year, we were still able to remain flexible and have just as much of a positive impact on our community. It truly shows that no matter what, we can make things happen!”

To meet the requirements for the National Council of Excellence Award, a student council must meet a variety of criteria. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic election process, the councils have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community. Councils awarded the gold level of the award have successfully demonstrated the highest levels of leadership. The Garnet Valley High School Student Council has received this standard not only once, but now for the seventh time in history.

National Student Council (NatStuCo) provides and promotes professional development and leadership training to student council advisers who, in turn, teach leadership skills to student council members. NatStuCo is dedicated to preparing and empowering student leaders to better serve their schools and communities. For more information, visit www.NatStuCo.org.

garnet-valley-high-school-class-of-2021-jessica-brewer-poem

Written by Jessica Brewer
Class of 2021

I wrote this as part of a project for school and thought I'd share!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you guys hear about Covid in the news?
I saw it's in China and on some cruise
I read it started from a guy and a bat
No way! I think I also saw some story like that
I just got a notification on my phone
It's the first Covid case in the US that’s known
Thats so scary but at least its not here
It’s not like we have anything to fear
Numbers are rising and it's starting to spread
We’re closing for a deep clean someone said
Then we get days off, that would be best
I know, right? We wouldn’t have to take this annoying test
Did you guys see the email that was sent out?
We have at least two weeks off, without a doubt
This is amazing! a super long spring break
Someone pinch me and make sure I'm awake
I’m kinda bored and ready to go back
Same, and I’m looking forward to lacrosse and track
Ugh, no spring sports and no junior prom
The rest of our year is on zoom dot com
At least we’re not seniors, I feel so bad
I know, I can’t imagine being a grad
Our senior year will be so fun
12 years of school all for this one
Well its September now and we’re still online
I thought for sure by now we’d be fine
I guess no Hoco or Friday night lights
No float dances or senior rights
Just get through this semester, we have the spring
I can’t believe this is all still a thing
I hate waking up and staring at the screen
This is supposed to be the year we remember as a teen
We should be walking the halls with joy and pride
Waving to old teachers, letting them know on which college we decide

We should be dressing up for the spirit event
And filling the yearbook with senior content
We should be with our friends that we have been beside
Since the 1st grade at the beginning of this ride
But instead we just stare at the names of these peers
That we may never see again after all these years
Now with only 4 months left for our class
We watch each week as monumental moments pass
In the time that remains, we look ahead
Hoping for memories beyond a zoom call from bed

gvhs-students-win-delaware-valley-science-council-awards

The Delaware Valley Science Council announced Garnet Valley students, Holly Crothers and Vikas Rana among the 2019 finalists in outstanding achievement in STEM fields. The high school seniors were all finalists in an earlier phase of the competition, having submitted exceptional applications for judging earlier this year, and sitting for interviews with area scientists this fall.

Vikas Rana finished top of the list with the Reuben Shaw Memorial award. Vikas will be attending Brown University after graduation. He will be pursuing a degree in Science. They offer an open curriculum and he will have the ability to shape his own education, he would like to approach science from a History standpoint.

Holly Crothers one of the recipients of the Excellence in Science Award sponsored by ASME Philadelphia Section, will be attending the University of Pittsburgh after graduation to pursue a degree at their College of Arts and Sciences. Holly would eventually like to go into public health, and was guaranteed a spot in their Graduate school.

We would like to congratulate both Vikas and Holly on this amazing accomplishment, it is a great recognition to the hard work that they have put in to their education.
