Author John O'Sullivan to Speak at Unionville about his Bestseller: Changing the Game

changing-the-game-by-john-osullivanchanging-the-game-by-john-osullivanChanging the Game: The Parents Guide to Raising Happy, High-Performing Athletes and Giving Youth Sports Back to Our Kids is a national bestselling book by John O'Sullivan. In his book O'Sullivan asserts that parents and coaches criticize performance and put too much pressure on their kids to be better, to win games, and to land sports scholarships.

Only 2% of high school athletes win scholarships (of these, the average is less than $11,000.) "This is the race to nowhere," O'Sullivan adds.

Join John O'Sullivan September 23rd at 7:00PM in the Unionville High School auditorium. Although it is not required, we encourage you to read Changing the Game before attending. The event is open to the public and neighboring school districts and communities are welcomed to attend.

Garnet Valley Middle School Students Debut Limited-Edition Chicken & Waffle Recipe benefiting Philabundance After Learning about Food Science in the Wawa Innovation Center

Wawa, PA (Thursday, September 5) – Wawa and Garnet Valley Middle School teamed up this past Spring for the inaugural Future Food Scientist Program where a class of 8th grade students spent a half-day in the Wawa Innovation Center learning about careers in food science through four interactive stations educating youth on nutrition, sensory, food safety and marketing. After the field trip, students were challenged to apply what they learned in developing recipes to pitch to Wawa culinary experts for a chance at being featured for a limited time in a Wawa store in their community.

On Thursday, September 5, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., the students with the winning recipe will debut their Chicken & Waffle special at their local Wawa Store, located at 721 Naamans Creek Road, Chadds Ford, PA, giving the community a first-taste of this limited-edition recipe, available at this for one week, with a portion of proceeds up to $1,000 benefiting Philabundance with funds benefiting programs serving our neighbors in need in Delaware County.

The event will also serve as an official kick off to the search for the next 8th grade class to come to the Wawa Innovation Center for the Future Food Scientist Program in October. Schools are encouraged to apply through Friday, September 15 by visiting: www.wawa.com/future-food-scientist

“Wawa is proud to continue its commitment to the community by inviting local students into our test kitchen to have hands-on, innovative experience as they explore potential careers in food science," said Mike Sherlock, Chief Marketing Product Officer. "This program enables us to Fulfill Lives in new ways by sharing our values and commitment to quality food, while enriching the curriculum of our local schools.”

About Wawa’s Future Food Scientist Program:

In May 2019, Wawa launched the Future Food Scientist Program to continue its promise of Fulfilling Lives in the community by opening our doors to our friends and neighbors from Garnet Valley Middle School to learn about careers in food science. The program offered 30 students a unique, behind-the-scenes look at how fresh quality food and beverages are made at Wawa through interactive activities, engagement with product development specialists and lab manual materials with key information.

About Wawa, Inc.

Wawa, Inc., a privately held company, began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th Century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, PA in 1902. The milk business was a huge success, due to its quality, cleanliness and “certified” process. As home delivery of milk declined in the early 1960s, Grahame Wood, George’s grandson, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products. Today, Wawa is your all day, every day stop for freshly prepared foods, beverages, coffee, fuel services and surcharge-free ATMs. A chain of more than 860 convenience retail stores (over 600 offering fuel), Wawa stores are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington, D.C. The stores offer a large fresh foodservice selection, including Wawa brands such as custom prepared hoagies, freshly-brewed coffee, hot breakfast sandwiches, specialty beverages and an assortment of soups, sides and snacks. In 2018, Wawa was recognized in Forbes as one of The Best Employers for New Grads and one of The Best Employers for Women, and as the Top-Rated Workplace for Veterans by Indeed. In 2019, Wawa was designated by Forbes as a Best Employer for Diversity.

SEPT. 3, 2019 - Glen Mills, PA

It was a beautiful morning at Garnet Valley School District and with the sunrise, we greeted our first day of school for just shy of 4,500 students!

The first to arrive were the students of Garnet Valley Middle School and Garnet Valley High School. GVMS Principal Lisa Stenz, Assistant Principals Gerry Weinhardt and Rick Martin, and teachers were there to greet and guide their middle school children as they entered the school. With smiles on their faces they were eager to start their first day!

At Garnet Valley High School, the students quickly navigated to their classrooms with the help of principal Steve Brandt, and Assistant Principals Dr. Greg Hilden, Dr. Joseph Kingsboro, and Lauren Hopkins, and many of the staff and teachers that littered the hallways. The high school embraces a new block schedule this year with the purpose to develop a flexible, student-centered schedule that would foster authentic and innovative learning experiences in order for ALL students to maximize their potential within Garnet Valley High School and beyond.

Last but certainly not least, our Elementary schools welcomed their students with open arms! Buses and cars filled the parking lots, and families gave their children one last big hug before watching their little ones take the hands of their new teachers and leaders for the 2019-2020 school year. Bethel Springs Elementary School students were welcomed with a rally of enthusiasm by Principal Steve Piasecki, and Assistant Tara Allen, and the wonderful teachers ready to kick off the new year. Concord Elementary School Principal, Dr. Adam Penning, and Assistant Principal, Ashley Leach, joined their teachers to offer the families and students a warm welcome as they entered the CES doors and hallways. And Garnet Valley Elementary School leaders, Dr. Jason Kotch and Caitlin Jones teamed up with their teachers and staff to welcome back returning students and offer a guiding hand to our new students as they learned the layout of the school.

On behalf of Garnet Valley School District, we would like to welcome ALL of our students and families with open arms - We invite you to embrace this next year and welcome those around you, make new friends, continue to learn inside and outside of school, and lead the way for global citizenship as a proud member of Garnet Valley School District.
