[GLEN MILLS, PA - October 14, 2019] Today, Garnet Valley Middle School principal, Lisa Stenz, surprised her teaching staff with coffee and cake to celebrate the progress of an initiative introduced just three years ago. Stenz proposed an idea that would offer teachers and staff the opportunity to seize their dreams and aspirations. She hoped to give them an opportunity to speak up about their unsung passions. Garnet Valley Middle School “Hopes and Dreams” was born.

“Hopes and Dreams” program offers teachers a chance to take a step out of their current position and explore an area of interest that they may not have initially chosen. Started in March of 2016, the Hopes and Dreams program was a suggestion brought up during a scheduling committee - three years later, more than a third of the staff has made a change in their professional committee.

“Everyone felt comfortable enough to talk about their passions and Lisa made that possible. Everything doesn’t have to stay the same because it has always been that way.” Eileen Stec, previous ELA teacher, now 6th grade Social Studies

“People will have time to figure out their professional passions and we have a team and the time to support their transitions.” - Lisa Stenz, Garnet Valley Middle School Principal

With just over 100,000 Pennsylvania college and university enrollments in 2017, a staggering 6% of those students will pursue an Education degree, according to Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education recently reported, the number of undergraduate education majors declined 55% nationwide, since 1996. Since 2009, the number of newly issued in-state instructional teaching certificates dropped by 71%.
Pennsylvania went from issuing 14,000 licenses to just 4,412 in the 2016-2017 year. Mike Tony, a writer for the Herald-Standard (Uniontown, PA), published an article July 29, 2019, highlighting these drops and attempted to shed light on the students declining interests in the education field. Read the article here.

Although these numbers continue to drastically change, Garnet Valley School District perseveres, hiring the best and brightest. Since January of 2019, the school district has posted and filled 23 teaching positions and interviewed 1,025 candidates.

As we approach the 2019-2020 school year, we continue to leverage our resources by creating an online following through @GV_Hire on Twitter, aggressively networking at college and university job fairs, and building our Garnet Valley School District brand. In 2019, our professionals spoke out and we were awarded one of the Top Large Work Places by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Garnet Valley continues to grow and evolve as a great place to live, learn and work.

Bethel Springs Elementary School, GVSD - July 8 - 12, 2019

This week Garnet Valley School District's, Bethel Springs Elementary School, hosted the Homegrown Institute: Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP.) Teachers from our schools gathered all week to learn, share and interact with colleagues and instructors in an effort to provide our students with a personalized learning experience within the reading and writing studies.

Instructors Purnima Vohra and Kristin Smith worked closely with our teachers, during the ELA writing institute, using tools to enhance their methods of teaching in the classroom. Two groups, grades K-2 and grades 3-5, worked diligently as they learned how to plan and structure a lesson, develop their own method of teaching, and how to approach and implement a reading analysis.

We would like to say thank you to all of the teachers that participated in this week's workshops, we are grateful that our students will have access to the resources and structure they need to be skilled and successful in their literary and writing studies.
