Dear School Community,

I wanted to inform you of a disturbing situation that occurred yesterday afternoon. There was an attempted child luring/corruption of a minor incident on Rebeccas Lane near Thornton Road in Concord Township. A male, driving a cream-colored sedan, described as Hispanic or Asian in his mid to late 40’s with short black hair, a baseball cap, and a beard, pulled his vehicle near the victim after she exited the school bus and proceeded to show her sexually explicit video on his phone. He then asked the victim if she would engage in sexual acts with him. Fortunately, this resourceful and courageous student did all of the right things and got home safely.

We are working in conjunction with the state police and are fully investigating the issue. All of our drivers are on heightened alert, and we ask that families reinforce their safety rules and expected behaviors with children this evening.

If anyone has information regarding this incident, please contact the Pennsylvania State Police, Media Barracks at 484-840-1000 or 911 for an immediate issue.

Sincerely,

Dr. Marc Bertrando, Superintendent

garnet-valley-communities-that-care-vaping-realities-of-parenting

The New Realities of Parenting is a special presentation for parents and guardians of K-12 children. The goal of this session is to heighten awareness for issues facing GVSD children, based upon concerns identified through the PA Youth Survey (PAYS). The more we know about the realities our children are experiencing, the more effective we can become at building strategies for our own families.

This session will offer a unique opportunity for all K-12 parents to learn, share, and support each other as a community. It takes a village to raise a child, and knowledge is power.

Please join us for this important discussion!

GVMS School Community,

I am so happy to share with our GVMS school community that we have been Re-designated as a Schools to Watch for 2019. As you recall from my previous communication in October, Garnet Valley Middle School was officially recognized as a "School to Watch in January 2017. Schools to Watch is a program developed by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. We completed the re-designation process at the end of October. Once again we have achieved state recognition for our best practices and our commitment to our students. This is a huge accomplishment and a direct reflection of our dedicated parent community, students, teachers, and staff.

Some of the highlights from the Schools to Watch report include:

  • Newly fluid master schedule with 57 minutes

  • School's shared vision

  • Maximizing our use of resources

  • Student's' expanded voice and choice in our classrooms and electives

  • Students' active engagement in classrooms

  • Mutual respect and rapport between teachers and students

  • Staff’s innovation and willingness to try new things in the classroom

Lastly, the specific strength associated with our parent community was represented in the following quote..."Parents appreciate the active and ongoing communication between home and school."

As you know, our school appreciates our parent community for their support and engagement.

In terms of our next steps for us as a middle school, the Schools to Watch team recommended that we continue to reinforce, expand, and grow our current practices such as...

  • Increase our use of cross-curricular connections across content areas

  • Expand our student goal-setting and student-led conferences that are turning the learning over to students

  • Increase opportunities to appreciate others' cultures

  • We wish all of you a wonderful holiday season.

Thank you again for your support.

Today organizations from around the Garnet Valley School District and beyond, gathered at Garnet Valley High School for the 3rd Annual Community Connections Breakfast hosted by the school district. Companies and organizations from surrounding communities connected with administrators, teachers, and students, in some cases to strengthen the already growing relationships, and in other cases, to create a new connections to explore educational opportunities for Garnet Valley students.

Dr. Marc Bertrando, Superintendent of Garnet Valley School District, had a goal to create a unified effort between the community and school district to better provide our students with real world learning experiences.

“Every year the connections breakfast evolves as more and more community partners get involved and as new ideas and relationships are established. It was so great to see the authentic and purposeful discussions taking place throughout the room, and I can't wait to see all of the great ideas put into action!” - Dr. Bertrando, Superintendent

The goal of the Community Connections Breakfast is to develop synergistic relationships between our District and our community providing students with authentic connections that will ignite passions, extend their learning, and ultimately prepare them for their futures.

Garnet Valley Middle School Students Debut Limited-Edition Chicken & Waffle Recipe benefiting Philabundance After Learning about Food Science in the Wawa Innovation Center

Wawa, PA (Thursday, September 5) – Wawa and Garnet Valley Middle School teamed up this past Spring for the inaugural Future Food Scientist Program where a class of 8th grade students spent a half-day in the Wawa Innovation Center learning about careers in food science through four interactive stations educating youth on nutrition, sensory, food safety and marketing. After the field trip, students were challenged to apply what they learned in developing recipes to pitch to Wawa culinary experts for a chance at being featured for a limited time in a Wawa store in their community.

On Thursday, September 5, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., the students with the winning recipe will debut their Chicken & Waffle special at their local Wawa Store, located at 721 Naamans Creek Road, Chadds Ford, PA, giving the community a first-taste of this limited-edition recipe, available at this for one week, with a portion of proceeds up to $1,000 benefiting Philabundance with funds benefiting programs serving our neighbors in need in Delaware County.

The event will also serve as an official kick off to the search for the next 8th grade class to come to the Wawa Innovation Center for the Future Food Scientist Program in October. Schools are encouraged to apply through Friday, September 15 by visiting: www.wawa.com/future-food-scientist

“Wawa is proud to continue its commitment to the community by inviting local students into our test kitchen to have hands-on, innovative experience as they explore potential careers in food science," said Mike Sherlock, Chief Marketing Product Officer. "This program enables us to Fulfill Lives in new ways by sharing our values and commitment to quality food, while enriching the curriculum of our local schools.”

About Wawa’s Future Food Scientist Program:

In May 2019, Wawa launched the Future Food Scientist Program to continue its promise of Fulfilling Lives in the community by opening our doors to our friends and neighbors from Garnet Valley Middle School to learn about careers in food science. The program offered 30 students a unique, behind-the-scenes look at how fresh quality food and beverages are made at Wawa through interactive activities, engagement with product development specialists and lab manual materials with key information.

About Wawa, Inc.

Wawa, Inc., a privately held company, began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th Century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, PA in 1902. The milk business was a huge success, due to its quality, cleanliness and “certified” process. As home delivery of milk declined in the early 1960s, Grahame Wood, George’s grandson, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products. Today, Wawa is your all day, every day stop for freshly prepared foods, beverages, coffee, fuel services and surcharge-free ATMs. A chain of more than 860 convenience retail stores (over 600 offering fuel), Wawa stores are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington, D.C. The stores offer a large fresh foodservice selection, including Wawa brands such as custom prepared hoagies, freshly-brewed coffee, hot breakfast sandwiches, specialty beverages and an assortment of soups, sides and snacks. In 2018, Wawa was recognized in Forbes as one of The Best Employers for New Grads and one of The Best Employers for Women, and as the Top-Rated Workplace for Veterans by Indeed. In 2019, Wawa was designated by Forbes as a Best Employer for Diversity.
