The Monthly Update–January

Superintendent’s Update:

The Board approved the change of the Garnet Valley High School schedule from a block to a modified block schedule for the the 2019-20 school year. The high school administration in concert with the Curriculum and Instruction Department will take the next year and half to engage committees to begin implementation plans.

Additionally, the Board approved changing the May In-service date from Tuesday, May 8 to Tuesday, May 15. This change is due to the primary election day being moved. When the District checked the website over a year ago, the date was listed as May 8th. However, it has since been moved to May 15.

Information Items

The Board addressed ten informational items during the meeting, and they were as follows:

  1. Congratulations to the 77, 9th through 12th grade students who placed in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLB) Regional Competition. Within this collective, we had 23 students take first place honors, 12 second place awards, and 7 third place honors.
  2. Appreciations to the Bethel Springs Elementary students who created the artwork on display in the lobby outside the Boardroom.
  3. Recognized Morgan Falcone and Ryan Hodge as Rotary Students for the month of January.
  4. Congratulated Erin Patterson, who was named the 2017 “Daily Times” Volleyball player of the year.
  5. Congratulated Danny Guy, who was named the 2017 “Daily Times” Football player of the year.
  6. Recognition that the District earned a spot on the 8th Annual AP District Honor Roll.  This honor is bestowed on District’s who have increased access to AP coursework, while maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams.
  7. Congratulated the following 8th Grade Algebra and Geometry students who placed in the American Mathematics Competition:
    1. Tanvi-Ani Panchumarhty, received 1st place at GVMS and 1st place in a section.  Tanvi-Ani was recognized with an Honor Roll of Distinction for scoring in the top 1% nationally.
    2. Juliet Yang, received second place in a section and was recognized with an Honor Roll Certificate for scoring in the top 5% nationally
    3. Katherine Li, received third place in a section and was recognized with an Honor Roll Certificate for scoring in the top 5% nationally.
  8. Announced the Budget Meeting Schedule. It is as follows: February 13th Athletics and Technology; February 20th Budget Presentation; May 14th Adoption of Proposed Final Budget; June 18 Adopt Final Budget. All meetings are at 7:00PM in the GV Education Center.
  9. Recognized January as School Director Recognition Month.  The theme for 2018 is “Pennsylvania Public Schools Success Starts Here.”  
  10. Adopted the Official PSBA Board of Directors Resolution:

WHEREAS, the role of locally elected school officials has served the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and local communities in meeting the needs of public ­education since the ­passage of the Free School Act in 1834; and

WHEREAS, these local boards have discharged their responsibilities to public

education in a manner which has placed public education in the

forefront of our educational ­systems; and

WHEREAS, locally elected officials have distinguished themselves and their

communities in this unpaid, volunteer public service commitment; and

WHEREAS, the contributions of these men and women should be recognized

and appreciated by those who benefit from the workings of our public school system;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association hereby proclaims the month of January as School Director Recognition Month in this commonwealth; and

FURTHER RESOLVE that this proclamation be communicated to all school districts, school ­officials and local communities in a planned program which brings visibility and awareness of the role of locally elected school officials to the citizenry of this ­commonwealth.

Education Items

The Board approved seven education items, and they are as follows:

  1. The change of the Garnet Valley High School schedule from a block to a modified block schedule for the the 2019-20 school year.
  2. The acceptance of a $100 donation by Amy Tarr and a $200 donation by Exelon, which is Ms. Tarr’s employer who doubled her donation,to the GV Varsity Club for Girls Basketball.
  3. The overnight trip of the GVHS French Club to travel to France from Thursday, June 25 to Friday, July 5, 2019. 40 Garnet Valley students will travel at no cost to the district.
  4. The SECOND reading for Policy #222, Tobacco Use/Delivery System, which is a revised policy. This motion is recommended by the Policy Committee, the Assistant Superintendents, and the Superintendent of Schools.
  5. The FIRST reading for policies:  #123.2 Recognized Athletic Groups/Club Sports, Policy #227 Drug and Alcohol Awareness, and Policy #918 Title I Parent and Family Engagement. All policies were reviewed by the Policy Committee on January 16, 2018.
  6. The change of the May in-service date from Tuesday, May 8 to Tuesday, May 15. This change is due to the primary election day being moved. When we checked the website over a year ago, the date was listed as May 8th. However, it has since been moved to May 15. After the calendar change has been approved by the Board, we will publicize it to the community. Clearly, there would be no school for students K-12.
  7. The travel of 7 teachers to attend the PA Education Technology Expo and Conference in Hershey, PA. The conference entails overnight travel. Each February we send a handful of administrators and teachers to the Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo and Conference  (PETE&C) as it is the only statewide conference focused on best practices in education. Garnet Valley was asked to showcase the great work being done in our district and several of our participants are running sessions this year. In addition, one psychologist will travel to the National Association of School Psychologists in Chicago and our prevention specialist to attend the PA Association of Student Assistance Professionals in State College.

Finance and Facilities and Personnel

All finance, facilities, and personnel items were approved.
