The Monthly Update–October

Superintendent’s Update:

Dr. Bertrando addressed several topics during his remarks, and they are as follows:

  • He congratulated the high school students, faculty, staff, and administration on a wonderful Homecoming weekend with special thanks to Kim Griego and Glen Abrams, Seth Brunner, and the high school administration for planning and facilitating spirit week, the pep rally, the parade, senior night, the game, and the firework display.  He also gave a special thanks to ValleyPoint Church for sponsoring the fireworks display.
  • He recognized the GVSD Education Foundation and the Hall of Fame Committee for another successful induction ceremony. Both organizations endeavor to support, promote and perpetuate the school district, and he felt that this year’s ceremony met all of the objectives. The Foundation promoted the district with the Induction ceremony that was attended by over 200 guests to celebrate five incredible graduates, it supported the district by raising over $8500 through the generous sponsorship and donations of our community members, businesses, and district vendors, and it perpetuated the legacy of excellence in the district by inducting five individuals who represented the type of extraordinary accomplishments that our safe and caring community nurtures.
  • The US Department of Education now requires that all school district websites meet the minimum accessibility requirements set forth in Section 508 of the American with Disability Act. The new mandate does not specify a date but the general consensus is that everything will go into effect by the start of next school year. This law will require many changes to our current site. In conjunction with this law, the Technology Department will also streamline and better organize our website to provide a better overall experience for all of our users. A lot of the work has already begun but we will be sending surveys out this month to gather feedback from all users.
  • The Pennsylvania Youth Survey will be administered on 10/26/17 at GVHS to 10th and 12th grade students (with an extended period starting at 9:00 AM).  The PAYS Survey will be administered on 10/30, 10/31, 11/1, 11/2 and 11/3 at GVMS to 6th and 8th grade students during their health classes.   This will be the third time the district has participated in the PAYS survey administration (beginning in 2013, every 2 years).  The information gleaned from the survey has been invaluable to our district as we plan for mental health and substance abuse education for students and parents.
  • He congratulated Dr. Citarelli who was in Arizona presenting at the American Association of School Personnel Administrators conference. His presentation titled “Teacher Hiring Practices:  What Practitioners Say Work” was selected out of hundreds of submitted presentation proposals.  This presentation comes directly from the research he conducted for his dissertation as well as the process that he has developed and implemented in two different school districts in the region.
  • He congratulated Pat Dunn, Anthony Gabrielle, and Sam Mormando who presented at this month’s Future Ready Conference. The conference was free to the district. Their presentation entitled Re-Engineering a Future Ready School District focused on the steps Garnet Valley took to make dramatic advances in the areas of culture, professional learning, technology integration, and curriculum and instruction. Their information was well-received and the team made some great connections. The group also hosted and presented at the DelCo Curriculum Coordinators’ Meeting with help of Christine Gumpert and Dave Pimentel.
