Superintendent’s Update:

Start of the School Year

As part of my public report to the Board, I thanked our students, parents, faculty, staff, and administration for their part in providing a tremendously smooth and positive start to the 2017-18 school year.  It’s so important to highlight everyone’s tremendous efforts, so THANK YOU!!!!

Hall of Fame

The Second Annual Hall of Fame Induction Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, October 19th at the Concordville Inn.  We will induct five GVSD Graduates into the Hall:  

  • Melanie Bergwall-Palladinetti, Class of 2004, a talented artist, athlete, entrepreneur, and founder of Surface Print Source
  • Eugene Botes, Class of 1999, an accomplished swimmer and 2004 Olympian
  • Steve Conrad, Class of 1977, owner and founder of S. B. Conrad Inc.
  • Dr. James Guille, Class of 1983, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon and the Director of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics and Co-Director of the Division of Spinal Disorders for Premier Orthopaedics–Brandywine Institute of Orthopaedics Division
  • Kirsten Seltzer, Class of 1996, the first female executive chef in the history of the Wigwam Resort’s four restaurants.

Thank you to those GVSD educators current and retired who had a part in their success!!!!

Miscellaneous Items

The Board approved a motion to approve the renewal of Mrs. Pat Dunn and Dr. Vincent Citarelli’s contracts. Both individuals are integral members of our school community and work tirelessly to lead and support this wonderful school district.

Information Items

There were six informational items that the Board recognized this evening:

  1. Congratulations to the 13 GVHS students who were named semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Competition! This number has risen from 4 students in the 2012-13 school year to 8 in 2015-16 to 13 this year. We are so proud of these extraordinary scholars who represent the approximately 16,000 students who scored the highest of the 1.6 million students who entered the contest by taking the PSAT. Our semifinalists are as follows:  Lainie W. Beauchemin, Natalia D. Orlovsky, Kemper J. Young, Adam F. Dole, Rohith S. Pamidimukkala, Marina Zhang, Andrew C. Li, Sarah V. Puts, Sabrina Zhang, Elena H. Murray, Kathryn E. Rossi, Aaron Y. Zhou, and Nathan Ominsky.
  2. The Delaware County Intermediate Unit arranges annually for a full-page ad in the local newspaper to notify the public of Special Education services available, access to such services, and information about district procedural safeguards as required by state and federal law. On August 17, 2017, the information was published in the Delaware County Daily Times.  The cost for having this information published is budgeted by the DCIU Special Education funding.  The information is kept on file at the Garnet Valley Education Center.
  3. NATIONAL SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK is October 16 to October 20, 2017
  4. AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK is November 13 to November 17, 2017
  5. The GV Community Education Association is now offering fall classes.  There are a number of fitness classes, pottery, bridge, ballroom dancing, just to name a few.  Brochure is available on the GV website –www.garnetvalleyschools.com.  For more information contact Marge Brown at 610 579-7367 or bronwm@garnetvalley.org.         
  6. A heartfelt thank you to Rosemary Fiumara in recognition of 8 years of service and her long-term contribution to the guidance of youth and public education as a member of the Garnet Valley Board of School Directors.  

Education Items

The Board approved five education items.  They are as follows:

  1. A motion to approve the overnight trip of the GVHS Model United Nations Club to travel to the Model UN Conference in State College, PA from Friday, November 03 to Sunday, November 05, 2017.
  2. A motion to approve the following gift of various plants and other garden supplies to the middle school garden club. The value of the gift is approximately $3,000 and it was donated by various vendors, families, and Home & School Assoc.
  3. A motion to approve the overnight trip of the GVHS French Club to travel to Quebec City and Montreal, Canada from Friday, April 27 to Tuesday, May 1, 2018.
  4. A motion to approve Thomas Dame to attend the National Science Teachers of America conference that entails overnight travel to Baltimore, MD from 10/6/17-10/7/17
  5. A motion to approve Tracy Karwoski and Bob Anderson as Voting Delegates to the 2017 Delegate Assembly to be held on October 20, 2017, in Hershey, PA as part of the PSBA Leadership Conference.
