Robb Elementary

Dear School Community,

It was with shock and sadness that I learned of the tragedy that took place at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas this evening. Our hearts and condolences go out to each and every one of the families in their community. I realize that when incidents such as this occur, we all feel a sense of anxiety and fear. As a precautionary measure, the Pennsylvania State Police and Bethel Police will be in and around the district tomorrow in order to provide additional security and peace of mind.

In addition to increased police presence, we welcome our school community to access the district’s Safe2Say app to anonymously report any strange or unwarranted behaviors that may pose a threat to our community.  Our schools crisis procedures and protocols are analyzed, revised and practiced routinely. Developmentally appropriate and vetted by security experts and the police, they are designed to respond to a number of emergency situations. Moreover, our buildings are equipped with security systems and cameras that allow district personnel to monitor individuals in and around our buildings.

Perhaps most importantly, we have a multitude of psychologists, counselors, and consultants standing by to support the students. These highly skilled professionals assist not only at-risk students, but also work with groups of students in such things as character education, anti-bullying programs, mental health awareness, and several other key areas of growth and development. Simultaneously, they also provide training to our teachers and staff members on how to detect signs that a student may need help.

From a reactive perspective as it relates to the tragedy, our educators will address the event in developmentally appropriate ways. With our elementary students, it will not be a discussion in classrooms even though some students may know what happened.  We will monitor and limit their exposure to the media by imposing very strict structures around technology usage that could include any news apps or have news embedded. At the secondary level where the developmental needs of the students are more diverse our educators will take a more differentiated approach. Regardless of the level, all district counselors will be available for students if they are having difficulty processing the event or if it has caused unwanted thoughts or emotions to occur.

As we continue to process the tragedy, please know that we are committed to providing a safe and caring environment in Garnet Valley. As always thank you for your support and cooperation and let’s keep the Robb Elementary School community in our thoughts and prayers.

Take good care,

Dr. Marc Bertrando, Superintendent
